Random Musings Part 5- Spiritual Evolution of an Individual
In a traditional family, from childhood, a child is taught about religion and culture in our society. But most of what is taught is only external forms devoid of essense. Hence, in most cases, when a child grows up,the elders are unable to answer the questions that rise in the young mind. So, the result is, either the Child looses all interest in religion and become casual about it, or he rejects the religion and becomes an athiest, or worst he becomes just like his elders following religious tenets without understanding it. This is the condition of the today’s society at large.
Many a times, some men and women get an inner inspiration(which again is Nature’s play itself ), an inner desire to explore the philosophy, of our Shastras or some aspect of our cultures. Many do not take that call. But few will take that call from nature and began exploring. Slowly, as they dive deep, studying many things here and there. They will start to get theoretical understanding of some portions of our shastras and our philosophy. They will find that this new found rational insight of Hindu philosophy slowly answering many of the doubts that had come to them in childhood. Slowly the apparently opposite things begin to make sense.
Like this, With time, one will come to have Sraddha/faith in the scriptures. This “Shraddha” is one of the qualification for Study of Vedanta.
Then, again by Inspiration he will pick up/or be guided by nature to perform one or other Sadhana. He will start by implement few of Shastric injunctions like honesty, truth, etc. This is Karma Anushtana. He may find himself getting drawn towards a particular form/deity. Then he will start worshipping that form. He will realize the deity is an aspect of Brahman itself, and long to be in its presence. This is Vidya upasana or Apara Bhakti. Only by doing such bhakti and karma, will one purify his mind-Chitta Shuddi. He will learn to surrender all actions n fruits of it to God. He will develop one pointed devotion to God.
And this purified mind will develop viveka, vairagya etc that are termed as Sadhana Chatushtaya- four fold qualification reqd for Study of Vedanta.
